Honor Killing Case: 20 Arrested, Including Satkzai Tribe Leader Sardar Sherbaz in Sanjeedi Degari Murder

In the area of “Sanjeedi Degari,” 40 kilometers from Quetta, an FIR has been registered, and 20 suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a couple. Among those arrested is the head of the “Satkzai” tribe, Sardar Sherbaz Satkzai, who ordered the killing during a jirga. He was presented today in an anti-terrorism court without handcuffs, accompanied by his full personal protocol, and the court granted a two-day remand.

Sardar Sherbaz

According to a Balochistan journalist, Sardar Sherbaz Satkzai, who issued the murder order, is “highly educated” and has studied abroad. He is a strong supporter of Baloch nationalism and has close ties with Akhtar Mengal and Yar Muhammad Rind, having also participated in the recent sit-in in Gwadar. On the other hand, Jalal Khan Satkzai, who carried out the killing, is closely associated with the establishment-backed Jamal Raisani and is active in his private but state-supported armed group.

If one seeks the truth, this case is likely to yield no significant outcome. The arrests and remands are mere formalities. Powerful individuals will only face a few court appearances, while a few minor accomplices may spend months or a year in jail. This incident, though routine in Balochistan, parts of southern Punjab, and Sindh, gained attention only because a video surfaced on social media 35 days later, forcing the government to take some action. Otherwise, a month had passed without the state, authorities, or agencies taking the matter seriously.

Interestingly, ultra-liberal, secular sardars, waderas, and even religious scholars and muftis in these regions justify such acts, calling them proud traditions. On this issue, figures like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari or Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman Baloch are unlikely to speak out openly.

The real issue is the tribal system. As long as it persists, humanity will continue to suffer in these areas. However, this very system benefits sardars, waderas, political parties, and the establishment, so no one will advocate for its end.
