Famine in Gaza, Closure of Rafah Border, and the Dead Silence of the Global Conscience

Gaza, where every particle of the land is bearing witness to war, hunger, and destruction, has now become the center of one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The United Nations, World Food Program, and other international organizations have confirmed that in northern Gaza, hundreds of children have died at the hands of famine, while millions of individuals are suffering from food scarcity. At this time, 93 percent of Gaza’s population is facing a shortage of food.

The ongoing game of death in Gaza is also the result of the hypocritical partnership of Arab governments. The majority of Western countries are providing military support to Israel, while on the other hand, the Sisi government in Egypt, established with the support of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Emirates, is aiding Israel by closing the Rafah crossing.

No one is counting those dying in Gaza. According to United Nations reports, more than 1 million individuals have been displaced from northern Gaza, while food reserves in southern Gaza have been completely depleted. The Israeli occupying army is deliberately targeting food and water supply lines. Israeli ministers have openly declared that “we will annihilate Gaza.”

In July 2025, when the severe shortage of food in Gaza took the form of a human tragedy, protest voices began to rise in Egypt. The public reaction to the closure of the Rafah crossing was extremely intense, with its peak manifesting on July 26 in Helwan in the form of an attack on a State Security police station. When protesters held police personnel hostage for five hours and insisted, “Open the Rafah crossing, Gaza’s brothers are dying of hunger!” This extraordinary event makes it clear that the Egyptian people are ready to go to any extent to express solidarity with the Palestinians.

In Cairo and other cities, small-scale public protests and social media demonstrations have raised questions about government policies. Especially on X (formerly Twitter), thousands of posts under hashtags like “#OpenTheCrossing” and “#GazaIsBleeding” have declared the closure of the Rafah crossing as “betrayal of the nation.”

Let it be clear that since the 2013 military coup, strict restrictions have been imposed on protests in Egypt. There is censorship on social media. For the current government, every citizen sympathizing with Gaza is a potential “threat.” By July 2025, approximately 60,000 individuals in Egypt are imprisoned on political grounds. These include leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, political activists, journalists, students, and human rights lawyers. Most individuals have been sentenced to long-term imprisonment or death penalties through opaque judicial processes.

Despite the authoritarian policies of the Sisi government, the backing of Gulf states, and media restrictions, this extraordinary solidarity of the Egyptian people for the oppressed Muslims of Gaza is a strong message: “Palestine is alive, and the voices of its supporters cannot be silenced.
