Who won in the chess match between Grok and OpenAI?

A unique chess tournament was held between the artificial intelligence models created by the world’s well-known technology companies, in which AI systems made for general use came face to face.
According to the British broadcasting organization, this event continued for three days on the Google-owned platform “Kaggle,” in which 8 models from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, xAI, and the Chinese companies DeepSeek and Moonshot AI took part.
In the deciding match, OpenAI’s O3 model defeated xAI’s Grok 4 and took the title, remaining unbeaten throughout the entire tournament.
The third position went to Google’s Gemini model, which defeated another model of OpenAI in the playoff match.
Although these AI models showed considerable ability in chess, they are still learning the subtle aspects of this game. Until the semi-final of the tournament, Grok 4 was being considered the favorite, but in the final, its performance suddenly dropped, and repeatedly making big mistakes, it even lost its queen.
Chess Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, in his commentary, said that Grok made many mistakes but OpenAI did not do so.
Chess has for a long time remained a measure of computers’ intelligence, but the purpose of this competition was to test the strategy and problem-solving ability of AI models made for general use.
