Tunisian Youth Defy Tyranny: Shocking Protests Ignite Democracy’s Revival!

On the fourth anniversary of democracy in Tunisia, the youth, crushing all obstacles, came out to protest, which left observers in astonishment.

In Tunisia, considered the greatest hope of democracy in the Arab world, the streets once again echoed with public slogans. On the fourth anniversary of Kais Saied’s constitutional revolution, thousands of youth, breaking all barriers, came out onto the streets. Despite intense heat and state pressure, this scene was unexpected for observers, because traditional political parties have disintegrated, and the role of the opposition has almost ended.

It should be remembered that the Arab Spring began from Tunisia. On this very land, the local branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, Ennahda Movement, established the first democratic government, but for the flagbearers of democracy, the Western countries, the growing popularity of Islamists was unacceptable. With the covert cooperation of Arab monarchies, especially the United Arab Emirates and Israel, democracy was wrapped up. Ennahda’s leaders and workers were thrown into jails, and Tunisia was pushed back into the darkness of dictatorship. Kais Saied, through one presidential decree after another, restored the authoritarian laws of Habib Bourguiba’s era.

But despite the worst suffocation and state oppression, the people are once again on the streets, which is proof of the fact that the voice of freedom cannot be suppressed for long with the force of power.

The most prominent feature in the protest demonstrations was the enthusiastic participation of the youth. This protest was not only political but also symbolic. The young boys and girls among the protesters, wearing black shirts, playing drums, and chanting slogans of freedom, were seen. Many had worn the Palestinian kufiya, which showed that their solidarity was not limited to Tunisia but appeared connected to global resistance movements.

During the protest, it became clear that the political parties established against the Brotherhood, especially the “National Salvation Front” and others, have completely lost their credibility. Differences, personal interests, and the policy of keeping distance from Islamist parties have rendered these forces ineffective.

According to political analysts, this weakness is actually an opportunity for new leadership. At the center of the current movement are the youth, who appear more aware and organized. This question is now being raised with full intensity: Will these youth be able to lay a new foundation for democracy in Tunisia?

The slogans echoing on the streets of Tunisia are announcing that oppression is temporary, public aspirations are permanent. The dreams that were trampled four years ago are rising again today. History has proven many times that public power does not tolerate dictatorship for long.
