Tsunami Warning Issued for Hawaii and Japan Following Pacific Coast Activity

Hawaii and Japan are on high alert as tsunami warnings have been issued following seismic activity in the Pacific. Authorities in both regions are closely monitoring the situation, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid coastal areas.

Hawaii: Governor Urges Caution as Tsunami Waves Approach

Hawaii Governor Josh Green addressed the public in a news conference, emphasising the unpredictable nature of the incoming tsunami waves. Data from Midway Atoll, located between Japan and Hawaii, recorded waves measuring 6 feet (1.8 meters) from peak to trough. However, Green noted that waves reaching Hawaii could vary in size, potentially larger or smaller.

Describing the tsunami as a “longitudinal wave with great force,” Green warned that even a 3-foot (90 cm) wave could drive significant water inland, posing risks to coastal areas. While no significant wave activity has been reported past the Big Island, authorities observed water receding multiple times in Haleiwa, a potential precursor to stronger waves.

Preparedness Measures in Hawaii

Governor Green stressed that Hawaii is “not yet in the clear,” and residents should remain cautious as the situation develops.

Japan: Ongoing Tsunami Waves Show No Signs of Receding

Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported that the country’s Pacific coast has experienced four to five rounds of tsunami waves, with no signs of the activity subsiding. Wave heights have increased from 20 cm (0.6 feet) earlier in the day to 1.3 meters (4.2 feet) in northeastern regions.

Ongoing Monitoring and Safety Recommendations

Both Hawaii and Japan are maintaining heightened vigilance as they monitor wave activity. Residents in affected areas are urged to:

Authorities in both regions emphasize that while no major damage has been reported, the situation remains dynamic, and the full impact may not be clear for several hours. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation evolves.
