What is special about the bill to impose a ban on children’s use of social media in Pakistan?
A bill has been presented in the Senate of Pakistan, which, if passed into law, will impose a ban on social media companies to ensure that their platforms are not used by children under the age of 16.
Last week, this bill was presented in the Senate by Senators Sarmad Ali and Masroor Ahsan, who are affiliated with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
It is stated in the bill that Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Bigo Live, YouTube, Threads, and all social media platforms will be restricted from allowing children under the age of 16 to use social media.
It is noteworthy that this bill has only been presented in the Senate so far. To become law, it will require approval from both the Senate and the National Assembly.
This bill has been named the Social Media (Age Restriction for Users) 2025.
