Islamabad Food Authority Seizes Donkey Meat in Major Crackdown in Tarnol

In a significant operation, the Islamabad Food Authority recovered over 50 donkeys and approximately 25 maunds of donkey meat from Tarnol on Sunday. The raid follows a similar seizure in Lahore, highlighting growing concerns over illegal meat trade in the region.

Dr. Tahira Siddiq, Deputy Director of the Food Authority, was present at the scene overseeing the operation. The authority has initiated the process of destroying the confiscated meat to prevent its distribution. A foreign national found at the location was handed over to the police for further investigation.

According to Dr. Tahira Siddiq, preliminary investigations suggest the meat was intended for supply abroad. The Food Authority is actively investigating to identify the areas where the meat may have been distributed. The Director of the Food Authority has ordered the immediate registration of cases against those involved in the illegal operation.

“The Food Authority is working round the clock to ensure the supply of safe and hygienic food in the city,” Dr. Tahira Siddiq stated, reaffirming the authority’s commitment to public health and safety.

Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the operation and prevent further violations.

Public Reaction

Posts on X indicate several questions on the public’s mind:

  1. Which areas and restaurants received the meat? People want to know if their favorite restaurants used this meat.
  2. Was the meat supplied to local markets? Many are worried about whether they consumed it unknowingly.
  3. How long has this illegal trade been going on? Users are asking how long this operation has been active.
  4. Is government failure to blame? Some have questioned the oversight of the Food Authority and other institutions.
  5. What was the role of the foreign national? People are demanding more details about the arrested individual, reportedly a Chinese citizen.

Role of Restaurants

So far, it is unclear which local restaurants received the meat. However, the Food Authority has stated that investigations are underway to trace the supply chain. In the past, similar operations in Lahore and Sargodha revealed that donkey meat was supplied to local restaurants and barbecue shops, passed off as beef. In one incident in Chiniot, two individuals were caught grinding donkey meat and processing hides.

Food Authority’s Commitment

Dr. Tahira Siddiq stated that the Food Authority is working tirelessly to ensure the supply of safe food in the city. She urged the public to report suspicious meat or food items to the authority. The agency is taking strict measures to eliminate this illegal trade, but public cooperation is essential to overcome this challenge.
